Did know that the Val di Non is also called the valley of canyons? If you also have an irrepressible passion for vertical rock faces, you will have made the same mental link as me: canyon = rock, rock = climbing! Bingo!
In Val di Non, you can find many walls rising up above the canyons where you can climb all year round, even in winter!
The famous wall where I discovered my passion for climbing is Marino Stenico, also known as Sedruna. It doesn’t matter how hot the weather is, here it is always refreshingly cool. It only takes a few minutes to get there from Fondo and, as a child, I would pop up there on summer afternoons, as soon as I had finished my seasonal job.
Then as I grew, so did my desire to climb. Anyone looking for me knows they are more likely to find me at the Mondino wall than at home!
Yes, I feel at home here. But I don’t just come here for the quality of the walls and challenge of the climbs, it the place itself!
I can set off from a ledge and after just four bolts I can be hanging 100 metres above the bottom of the canyon. The trees get smaller and my only company comes from the swifts who swoop and play with each other. What a thrill! And then there is the landscape in wintertime: the morning sunshine which warms my back whilst below me the canyon is covered in frost. As I drop down from the anchor, I smile at the nearby snow-capped peaks which, from above, look like little ice crystals.
I could go on for hours, telling you all about how much I enjoy climbing in the Val di Non.... Well, you know where to find me!
