Via Vigilius - long-distance route from Monte San Vigilio above Lana to Trento

The Via Vigilius follows in the footsteps of Bishop Vigilius of Trent, who was born in 355 and presumably died around 405 in the Rendena Valley.Vigilius was a missionary in the upper Adige Valley and in the area of Trent as far south as Lake Garda. Thanks to his efforts, new parishes and churches were built. Numerous churches and chapels in the mountains, as well as the little church in San Vigilio, still bear his name. When he went to Val Rendena and threw a statue of Saturn into the river Sarca, he aroused the wrath of the pagans, who killed him, using sticks and wooden clogs. His remains were then taken to Trento to be buried in the cathedral, which he had himself built and where they are still found today. Saint Vigilius is one of the patron saints of South Tyrol, Trentino and also the patron saint of mines. His name derives from Latin and means vigilant. The Bishop's footsteps can often be found along the Via Vigilius, such as the small church of San Vigilio at the mountain of the same name, the pilgrimage site Senale, the sanctuary of San Romedio, and then down the Via Villi, where the Bishop passed for the last time before arriving in Val Rendena.

The Via Vigilius is a route in stages starting from the top station of the Monte San Vigilio cable car and ending at Vela, near Trento. The route can be completed in eight daily stages, some of which have an ascent of up to 1,300 metres. The longest stage is 20 km. All stages of the Via Vigilius are feasible as individual day hikes. Train or bus connections are ideal for arriving at the various starting points of the stages or for possibly making the return journey. However, it remains an extraordinary adventure to walk the entire Via Vigilius route in seven or eight days. The entire route is 109.2 km long, with an ascent of 6970 m and a descent of 7090 m. The route starts in South Tyrol, and on the third day it crosses the border into the province of Trento. A large part of the Via Vigilius runs along the quiet and little-known high plateau of the Val di Non. At each stage there are several places to refresh oneself, staying overnight in hotels, pensions, or in mountain huts and alpine pastures. The Via Vigilius, with the exception of a few short sections where particular care must be taken, is easy but requires a steady pace and good physical condition.
