If there’s one thing we can always be sure of, it’s that Val di Non, with its varied nature and landscapes ranging from gentle to magnificent, is a perfect place for all kinds of activities, keeping everyone happy and never boring!
If you’ve heard that Val di Non is great for children and that family holidays here can be truly special, we can only confirm it. To support this reputation and to inspire those who haven’t thought of it before, we’ve put together a selection of activities ideal for a family holiday in the valley, and we’ve picked 5 that are our—and so far, your—favorites!
Discovering San Romedio and Bruno the bear
One of the valley’s most iconic spots, the Sanctuary of San Romedio near Sanzeno, is a destination full of diverse experiences that can’t be missed, especially with little ones!
San Romedio tops our list not only because it can be reached via an easy yet adventurous path carved into the rock and is located in a dramatic setting among deep canyons, or because it looks like a fairy-tale castle, but also because nearby lives Bruno, a brown bear rescued from a difficult and cruel situation.
San Romedio is, in short, many experiences and emotions in one.
Visiting San Romedio combines an adventurous walk with the wonder of unusual natural landscapes, awe at a truly unique building, and an incredible—and surprisingly tender—encounter with Bruno. Bruno is a magnificent brown bear cared for with great attention in the sanctuary area. Approaching his enclosure, you’ll find his story and all the care he has received since his rescue.

The Rhaetian Museum, a small treasure of big discoveries
You might not know that Val di Non is home to a small museum, the Rhaetian Museum, which is a real gem to explore with your children.
At the edge of Sanzeno, right opposite the entrance to the rock path leading to San Romedio, is this small museum with contemporary architecture, preserving ancient finds that tell a piece of the valley’s history. Named after the Rhaetians, an ancient Alpine people, the museum takes visitors on a journey from prehistory to the Middle Ages. If you’ve retained even a fraction of a child’s curiosity, it’s fascinating to see the area’s archaeological discoveries.
As mentioned, it’s a small, well-curated museum that’s pleasant to visit and never overwhelming. Its proximity to San Romedio makes it a perfect combination for a visit.

A treasure hunt to discover Castel Valer
If you’ve heard that Val di Non has the highest concentration of castles, it’s true! Not all are in good condition or visitable, but Castel Valer is a must-see.
Located near Tassullo, Castel Valer is a fabulous castle, complete with furnishings, open to the public for a few years. Its beauty is breathtaking, and once inside, you are transported back in time—a fascinating experience for children and adults alike.
To make the experience even more immersive and fun, we created a special activity for children called the “Treasure Hunt at Castel Valer,” a family-friendly way to explore. Children are guided to discover details while older kids solve puzzles and games—a fun, different way to explore a spectacular place with the whole family.

Night adventure in the Rio Sass Canyon
Apples might be the first thing that comes to mind with Val di Non, but another distinctive feature is its high plateau with spectacular canyons.
One of the most famous is the Rio Sass Canyon in Fondo, a special nature trail with ladders and walkways, perfect for adventurous family experiences, especially at night. In summer, part of the trail is illuminated with lights and colored effects, creating an unforgettable experience—not just for children!
The night tour of Rio Sass Canyon lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes and must be booked in advance. Upon booking, you’ll also receive practical advice on clothing, warnings, and trail characteristics.

Walks to meet the farm animals
No summer in the mountains is complete without visiting a malga, and Val di Non offers plenty of options. The malgas are destinations for walks, discovery, and contact with animals.
Depending on the experience you want and your children’s walking habits, you can choose malgas reachable by car or those requiring longer walks. Visiting a malga allows encounters with cows, and depending on the farm, horses, goats, chickens, and rabbits. The malga world is a little like Heidi’s adventures—full of surprises and joy.
For an ideal visit, it’s important to check the paths and the type of malga. Most malgas with cows also offer a restaurant and farm shop.
