Hidden castles waiting to be discovered - on foot

Val di Non is a valley rich in history and castles are scattered throughout the landscape.

As well as the most famous castles, such as Castel Valer and Castel Thun, which are open to visitors, the valley also hides ancient ruins immersed in nature, easily accessible on foot.

These are fascinating places where the stones tell the story of the Middle Ages and forgotten battles, while the view is always well worth the effort of the walk.

Read on to find out more about some of the most evocative ruins in the Val di Non, all of which are within easy walking distance!

Castello d'Altaguardia: towering over Trentino

Castello d'Altaguardia - Simone Covi

At 1,280 metres a.s.l., Castello d'Altaguardia dominates the valley from above and is considered the highest castle in Trentino.

It was built in the 13th century by the Thun family to control the passage along the road to Val di Sole.
It was destroyed in the 15th century during the war between the bishops of Trent and the local nobility.

All that remains today are the ruins of the tower and the surrounding walls. Its spectacular location makes it one of the most fascinating sites to visit.

How to get there: the ideal starting point is the small town of Bresimo. From here you can follow a well-marked path that climbs through the woods to the ruins of the castle, with a difference in altitude of about 300 metres and a 40-minute walk.

Castel San Pietro: where history and legend meet

San_Pietro_6.jpg

Castel San Pietro, an important medieval fortress, stands on a rocky spur above the town of Vigo di Ton.

The first records of the castle date back to 1238 A.D., when it was inhabited by the Counts of Appiano. According to local legend, the castle was cursed and eventually abandoned.
It is said that a nobleman, after committing a serious crime, received a sinister prediction: his house would be destroyed and his lineage wiped out.

Whether the story is true or not, the manor was left in ruins and no one has dared to live there since. Today, only the ruins of the tower and walls remain, but the panoramic view over the valley is incredible.

How to get there: from the centre of Vigo di Ton, follow the path that leads to the ruins in about 30 minutes. The climb is not too difficult. However, some parts are exposed, so you will need sturdy shoes and a bit of caution.

Castel Sporo: a forgotten stronghold

Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, Castel Sporo was a small fortress that controlled the road between Val di Non and Val di Sole.

It was a small defensive structure compared to the great castles of the valley, but nevertheless important for the control of the surrounding territory.

It was probably abandoned in the 16th century when the roads it controlled became less important. Today there are only a few remains of the walls, well hidden among the trees.

How to get there: from the town of Sporminore, take the SP73 towards Spormaggiore. After about 1 km you'll find a small car park on the right, near a picnic area. From here, take the SAT 507 path that goes up into the woods. You'll reach the castle ruins after a 40-minute walk and a 250-metre climb. The path is well marked, but it is not in good condition, so it is advisable to wear hiking boots.

Castel Corona: sheltered in the rock

Castel Corona is perhaps the most spectacular of these ruins, perched on a cliff overlooking the valley.

It wasn't a traditional castle, but a fortified refuge used by the noble Corona family in times of danger, such as war or enemy attack.

Its strategic position made it almost impregnable, accessible only by a narrow mountain road. All that remains of it today are the foundations and some parts of the walls.

How to get there: the castle is located above the village of Cunevo. From the village follow the road to Lover. Just before Lover, on the right, you'll find the sign for the SAT 308, which leads to the ruins. The route is short but steep, with a 30-minute walk and a 200-metre difference in altitude. Some parts are exposed, so be careful and wear appropriate footwear. The view of the valley and the area below is breathtaking once you reach the top.

These places do not have entrance fees or opening hours: they are part of the landscape and just waiting to be discovered, ideally on a beautiful sunny day!

The hidden castles of Val di Non are the perfect destination to discover, among quiet paths and silent woods, unique places of the past away from the beaten tourist track.
