like the muffled sound of the forest in winter. Do you know what I mean? Like when you ring a bell whilst gripping it with your hand. This dull sound envelops me and makes me feel at one which the forest as it rests in winter. Or rather, as it tries to rest! Because my snowshoe walks with friends don’t go unnoticed: we leave tracks in the snow and a trail of laughter in our wake! And I know just how much a glass of mulled wine revitalises you, sitting in front of a nice, warm fireplace!
Snowshoe walking is easy, you don’t need any special technical skills, just a bit of a sense of adventure and an urge to enjoy some outdoor exercise.
Add in a pair of boots, some snowshoes and a pair of hiking poles and you’re good to go! Are you ready to heed the call of the woods? The beauty of snowshoeing is that everyone can do it, even if it’s their first time. Join a walk with a mountain guide or choose the route which best suits your physical capabilities. Remember though that snowshoe walking is more tiring than normal walking, using up to 50% more energy!
For this reason, I recommend that you chose a route that has a mountain dairy or hut as a destination.
If you have had a bit of practice and want to push yourself higher, why not aim for the panoramic ridge of the Costiera della Mendola and its chain of mountains: Monte Macaion, Monte Penegal, Monte Roen and the Corno di Tres. Or plan a walk to the wild peaks of the Maddalene range: my favourite ones are the Cima Belmonte and the Cima Lavazzè. Always remember to check the snow conditions, the avalanche report and to take with you an avalanche beacon, a shovel and a probe!
Before setting out on an excursion at altitude, plan your trip with care. If you are inexperienced or you intend to tackle a route graded as technically difficult, then consult an alpine or mountain guide. You should also contact the refuge warden in the area you’ll be visiting for the latest weather information and to discuss whether your route is advisable.
Take prudent precautions, wear suitable clothing for your route, and remember to act responsibly in the mountains at all times.
